Hervormers nemen Moldavië op de schop

Chișinău – In Moldavië begint de hervormingsgezinde regering het nieuwe jaar met de wind in de zeilen. Kort voor Kerstmis kondigde het Internationaal Monetair Fonds (IMF) aan ruim vijfhonderd miljoen euro beschikbaar te stellen – geld dat premier Natalia Gavrilița hard nodig heeft om de schade te herstellen van jaren mismanagement en corruptie door Moskou-gezinde regeringen. De IMF-leningen volgen op eerdere financiële injecties van de Europese Commissie.

Moldavië’s gele revolutie

De vervroegde parlementsverkiezingen in Moldavië afgelopen maand zijn met een verpletterende meerderheid gewonnen door president Maia Sandu’s Partij voor Actie en Solidariteit (PAS). Een flinke opsteker voor Sandu, in november gekozen tot president: zij kan nu doorpakken met het bestrijden van corruptie en het land dichterbij de Europese Unie brengen.

Ukraine Battles It Out Over Judges For Its New Anti-Corruption Court

On January 9, a coalition of anti-corruption NGOs in Ukraine rejected almost half of the 113 candidates for the country’s new High Anti-Corruption Court as “questionable.” The move came after the Public Council of International Experts vetoed the first eight candidates for the court a week earlier. The court is a high-stakes international effort to reduce corruption in the Ukraine, and a condition for unlocking the next $2 billion in aid to Kiev from the International Monetary Fund (IMF). It is slated to open by the end of March.

Damning McKinsey Report Shows What Future of Lebanon Could Hold

Last Friday, January 4, a long-awaited macro-economic report by the McKinsey consulting firm, was released by the Lebanese government. Originally scheduled to be publicly released after the new cabinet was inaugurated, caretaker Economy Minister Raed Khoury said Monday that delays with government formation, together with Lebanon’s worsening economic situation, had pushed him to publish the report sooner.

Corrupt Government Sacks Anti-Corruption Head in Romania

After months of mounting pressure from the government, Romania’s president confirmed his dismissal of the country’s top anti-corruption prosecutoron July 9. Laura Codruța Kövesi was the chief prosecutor of Romania’s National Anticorruption Directorate (DNA), a position she held from May 2013 until the time of her sacking.
